SEA (Site Environmental Awareness) training at the Dorking National Flood Mangement Scheme
Natural flood management interventions (NFM) play a vital role in flood prevention schemes. Mackley are working with specialist contractors at Coldharbour in Surrey, designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, creating ‘Leaky Dams’ in the streams that run through Leith Hill woods. Using natural resources such as trees trunks and branches, these Leaky Dams’ reduce the speed at which water runs through the woodland into the River Mole.
Part of a nationwide Environment Agency £15million initiative, this site is being managed by Sean Roberts a construction trainee and being overseen by Project Manager, Nick Pitcher. Sussex-based, civil engineers, Mackley are acutely aware of environmental issues and we provide them with SEA training on all their sites.
Sean is seen here with a habitat pile – a bi-product of the project. Brash and logs left over from building the dams can be left on site in habitat piles to encourage nesting birds and small mammals. Dead and decaying wood is also excellent habitat for fungi and insects, which in turn become food for birds and mammals and as such a crucial part of the woodland ecosystem.
